The story: This 28 lb tuna was caught with hook and line off of the Columbia River on the West Coast in the summer of 2017. 3 to 4 years old, it was born off the north coast of Japan, and traveled the full breadth of the Pacific Ocean (5000 miles) in order to arrive in time for the great West Coast upwelling event that starts in May of each year. This is one of the great feeding frenzies on the planet: Phyto plankton feeding on the rich nutrients brought up from the deeps by wind action, in turn feed zoo plankton, which are then consumed by forage fish…the Albacores favorite omega rich meal.

This tuna is a warm blooded creature capable of swimming up to 50 miles per hour and has brilliant markings of iridescent blue and green, giving it the nickname“butterfly of the sea”.
