Indigo Columbia River White Sturgeon

The White Sturgeon, a prehistoric fish native to North America, are among the most ancient of fish and todays species look nearly identical to the fish that prowled river bottoms over 100 million years ago. It is renowned for its immense size, known to exceed 20 feet and 1,500 pounds. Occasionally found in the open ocean and saltwater estuaries, the favorite habitat of these bottom dwellers are large cold-water rivers where they can live to be over 100 years of age. Their unique, armor-like scutes and vacuum-like mouths make them fascinating, yet vulnerable due to overfishing and habitat loss.
